Strategic Business Design engenders organizational capabilities - the distinctive ways in which an organization’s work processes are arranged and how its employees are motivated to attain specific strategic business objectives.
These capabilities are a combination of primary competencies, innovation, product development and customer relationship management, among others. The key for any organization is to nourish and adjust these competencies to accomplish long-term strategic objectives.
The principal tenet behind business design is to use concepts, design principles and business innovation to design an organization that will operate in ways that will release and make the most of its staff’s core competencies.
Business design is a very important instrument for reshaping the total look and sense of an organization. This will impact the organizational architecture of the firm. In implementing this, the firm’s structure, capabilities and performance will shape the universal outline of organizational architecture. Strategic business design then presents the particular elements of how work processes will be arranged and managed.
Business Design is a never ending process that needs to be retooled to align with dynamic changes that occur in an organization’s competitive environment. There is a global perspective to the concept of business design. Universally, it is one of the most powerful tools for affecting organizational change in an organization
- Business Design facilitates performance change configurations in a considerable way. This involves moving resources to facilitate efficiency and realigning strategic focus to areas that offer better potential for expansion
- Business Design highlights specific organizational matters that needs the attention of top management
- Business Design offers every employee in the firm the chance to be part of the process of change. It provides a sure indication of the advent of a new organizational structure that ushers in innovative methods of accomplishing tasks
- Business Design changes an organization’s culture. It causes changes in systems, processes and practices, promotes employee competencies, realigns how the organization’s resources are utilized and how employees are rewarded for great performance
The overall result of implementing a business design program is that it becomes the focal point in the life of an organization.
To execute a flawless business design program, an organization needs to use a complete and stable approach that acknowledges human dynamics, strategic demands and technology underpinnings necessary to accomplish the task at hand. The basic components of this approach are:
- Make business design a necessary and continuing part of the organization’s processes
- Have a general vision for the firm, embedded within a strategic plan with a transparent series of business objectives
- As decisions are being made within an organization, two features of business design must be applied to the process: competency level required to accomplish the goal and its impact on individuals, staff inter-personal relationships and dynamics inside the firm
- Set the ultimate goal of business design as the establishment of a new innovative organizational architecture that will facilitate excellence in performance by utilizing the concentration of strengths within the firm
An organization should choose a model that places the function of business design in a larger organizational framework.
